Persian Wedding Spread (Sofre Aghd - سفره عقد )–Part 3

As with my post on June 24th, this Post, will be highlighting some more of the different parts of the wedding spread. All pictures are from the same spread, though more detailed pictures of each Item will follow later in the post

In the post we will cover some of the commonly edible Items that are found on the spread.

Some of the edible items are Sugar Coated almond slivers (Noghl)[1], Honey[2], decorated eggs[3], a decorated flatbread (Sangak)[4],  decorated nuts[11], and commonly a gift for the guests[12]

One of the most common sweets are Sugar Coated almond slivers (Noghl) [1], although they may appear in different forms. This sweet also is thrown over the bride and grooms head (as is rice in western traditions) again showering them with sweetness. In many cases little golden coins (poolak) may also be thrown, which represents shower them with riches.

Another common tradition is the bride and groom place these candies in each others mouths after the ceremony.

Honey [2] also represents sweetness, and it is supposed to be consumed right after the ceremony, to seal in a lifetime of happiness.  Traditionally the bride and groom dip their pinkies, and feed the other, to chants of “Playful Bite it”

Eggs [3] and Nuts [11] (in their shells) are decorated and placed on the spread to represent fertility.  In some cases undecorated and readily edible nuts will also be placed on the spread.

The Decorated Flatbread (Naan-e Sangak) [4] represents prosperity of feasts and good food for the couple.  It is usually baked specially for the wedding, and either decorated with poppy / sesame seeds, or other decorations are used, mainly to congratulate the couple – The term “Mobarak bad”  is the most common words used, however here, the words congratulate the couple on their union.
